MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins left-handed pitcher Johan Santana is scheduled to have minor elbow surgery next week to remove a bone chip.

Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Santana's situation was not serious.

"He's had that," Ryan said Thursday. "It didn't restrict his pitching. We just want him to take care of it before he goes home."

Santana is coming off a breakout 2003 season where he went 12-3 with a 3.07 ERA. His season really took off after he was promoted from the bullpen into the rotation July 11.

The 24-year-old was 11-2 as a starter with a 2.85 ERA, including a 5-0 record with a 1.07 ERA in August to earn AL Pitcher of the Month honors. Santana, who started Games 1 and 4 of the American League Division Series vs. the Yankees, pitched 158 1/3 innings and led the Twins with 169 strikeouts.
